Our Zoning Administrator/Enforcement Officer is available at the Milton Township Hall on Mondays from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. or by appointment.  269-684-2930.

 

Milton Township Zoning Map

The Zoning Ordinance is designed to protect the owners and/or occupiers

of property in Milton Township;

allow them to enjoy freedom from incompatible uses in their neighborhoods;

assure that homes and businesses are safe and natural resources are not abused.

 Since every circumstance cannot be foreseen, an application to the Zoning Board of Appeals

is always available to determine if an exception can be made or a variance is possible.

 

The purposes of the Milton Township Zoning Ordinance are:

  • Promote and protect the public health, safety and general welfare.
  • Protect the character and stability of the various areas within the Township and promote the orderly and beneficial development of such areas.
  • Regulate the intensity of land use and determine the area of open space surrounding buildings to provide adequate light and air and convenience of access to property.
  • Lessen and avoid congestion on highways and streets.
  • Provide for the various land use needs of landowners, such as recreational, residential, commercial and industrial.
  • Preserve agricultural lands which have been determined to be essential to the stability and future economic well being of the Township.
  • Fix reasonable standards to which buildings and other structures shall conform.
  • Prohibit uses, buildings, structures which are incompatible with the character of development permitted in the zoning districts.
  • Protect against nuisances and hazards in the interest of the public health, safety, and general welfare.
  • Conserve the taxable value of land, buildings and structures throughout the Township.
  • Provide for the completion, extension, substitution or elimination of nonconforming uses.

 Copies of the Zoning Ordinance Book are available for $12.00 at the Milton Township offices.

Copies on CD can be purchased for $5.00 but must be preordered.

Copies of individual pages are available at no charge under 20 pages.

 

Building Permits

o              First fill out the Building Permit application which includes drawing a site plan.

o              Submit this to the Zoning Administrator, Van Thornton, at the Township Offices for zoning approval.

o              When the site plan is approved, apply for the Building Permit from the Building Inspector.

o              The Building Inspector is Dan Kulwicki, and his office is in the Ontwa Township Hall on Main Street in Edwardsburg.

o              Dan's Office Hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 - 12.

o              Click on links below to print out each of the four pages of the Building Permit Application, then fill out and return to the Township Hall.  These forms are sometimes difficult to see clearly when printed from the website.  You may also obtain one by picking it up at our office, or we can fax, mail, or email you a copy for your convenience.  If you have any questions, call the Milton Township Zoning Administrator, Van Thornton, at 269-684-2930 or contact him by email at zoning@miltontwp.org.

__Parcel Division Applications

You may pick up an application in the township office or print out the application.

q             Fill out, sign, and return to the township office to the attention of the Zoning Administrator.

q             The non-refundable fee for processing the application will be $150.00 (base fee) plus $50.00 per parcel (the number of parcels is how many parcels the property is being split up into).  Make checks payable to "Milton Township".

q             The application must be approved by both the Zoning Administrator and the Assessor.  You will be contacted by the township office when the process is complete and informed of whether or not your application has been approved.

You may obtain an application for rezoning, conditional use or variance in the township office located at 2576 E. Bertrand rd.  the cost for these items is $500.00 per application with Attorney fees not to exceed $200 and $25 postage.
